Communications Manager

Location: Las Cruces, New Mexico (or remote within the Southwest United States)

Position reports to: Campaign & Program Director

Why Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project?

In 2017, a group of long-time conservation advocates and friends from Las Cruces, New Mexico came together. Tired of being tokenized in conservation and outdoor recreation spaces, they worked to create opportunities for Latinx/Hispanic borderland community members to engage with, access, and learn about public lands and waters. Two years later, Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project (Nuestra Tierra) formally established itself as a 501(c)(3) non-profit and began to spearhead state and national-level policy work. Nuestra Tierra is a small and growing organization who believes in investing in their team to create a work environment that is engaging, fun, and impactful.

Position Summary

The Communications Manager will work in partnership with the Campaign & Program Director to successfully create and manage communications strategies tailored towards various stakeholders. They will envision and execute communications campaigns from start to finish, including coordinating with coalition partners, managing contracted creators, launching ad buys, writing and placing op eds and LTEs, and creating press releases to promote earned media. This role is also responsible for maintaining Nuestra Tierra’s website, social media channels, and general online presence.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop long term communications strategies to further the organization’s  mission, vision, and values.
  • Lead the generation of content that ensures Nuestra Tierra’s online presence is dynamic, relevant, and mission-driven.
  • Create and maintain procedures and long term assets to ensure that all printed and digital materials remain focused, consistent, and on-brand.
  • Collaborate with the Campaign & Program Team to create consistent and effective campaign strategy to guide communication on Nuestra Tierra’s current goals and objectives.
  • Source, create, and archive visual content for inclusion in Nuestra Tierra’s website and social media outlets.
  • Write and disseminate Nuestra Tierra’s online newsletter, email campaigns, and blog posts to promote awareness about and participation in Nuestra Tierra programs and activities.
  • Build and maintain ongoing relationships with all media contacts to create momentum for and awareness of Nuestra Tierra programs, campaigns, and activities.
  • Conduct outreach to press outlets, magazines, and influencers to build strategic partnerships and public awareness of the organization.
  • Work with the Development Manager to create donor appeal and thank you letters, annual reports, and other promotional materials.
  • Write content to support campaign and marketing efforts, including newsletters, website copy, brochures, and press releases.
  • Consistently manage and update Nuestra Tierra’s website.
  • Encourage and coordinate staff contributions to Nuestra Tierra’s website, social media, and other communication channels.
  • Collect photos and/or videos taken at Nuestra Tierra events and maintain photo files for ongoing use.
  • Track online analytics and other communications-related metrics to  create reports that support internal and external data needs.
  • Plan, facilitate, and take notes on all communications meetings in order to gather essential information from other staff members and disseminate it to the public.
  • Stay up-to-date on industry trends and make recommendations for adjustments to communications strategies and practices.
  • Organize and Archive mentions in print/digital media and other examples of Nuestra Tierra in the News.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • 3+ years of campaign communications experience
  • A passion for protecting public lands and supporting equitable access to the outdoors
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to learn and master new communication formats quickly
  • Ability to generate and implement new, creative ideas to communicate Nuestra Tierra’s mission, vision, and programming
  • Organized, efficient, reliable, and detail-oriented with strong interpersonal skills
  • Skilled at and enthusiastic about building relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience with online communication tools, including Email Campaigns, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tiktok, and LinkedIn
  • Desire to problem solve and think creatively
  • Ability to relate to people of diverse backgrounds, training, and experience
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to Nuestra Tierra’s mission
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred

Compensation Package

  • $65,000 - $80,000 annually depending on experience
  • 100% Employer paid health, dental and vision insurance
  • 15 days Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • 17 days Holiday Pay
  • 6 days Sick Leave
  • 4 months Paid Parental Leave 
  • Bereavement Leave
